Pat was busy in her garden when I came home from work.

I leaned over the gate. ‘Did you have a nice holiday?’

‘Lovely, dear, thank you.’ Pat put down her secateurs. ‘What’s been happening here?’

‘George and Val had a barbeque,’ I told her. ‘It was really good fun.’

I didn’t tell Pat, although I would one day, that Aidan was there, that we got on very well and that he walked me home – all thirty yards across the road! I would tell her though about getting the key for her house and that the ‘missing’ letters had now been delivered correctly to my own address.

‘So you’ve met some of the neighbours then,’ Pat said. ‘That’s nice.’

‘Yes,’ I agreed, smiling, ‘it is.’
